“Principles and Techniques of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in vegetable crops for tribal farmers of Meghalaya”
A Three Days Training Programme on “Principles and Techniques of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Vegetable Crops for Tribal Farmers of Meghalaya” was organized under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) at the Division of Crop Science, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya during 25th–27th February, 2026. A total of 26 farmers from Klew, Umramblei and Umraleng villages of Ri-Bhoi district actively participated in the training programme. The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Sr. Scientist, Division of Crop Science, Dr. Pankaj Baiswar, Pr. Scientist and Head, Division of Crop Science, highlighted the importance of scientific package of practices of growing vegetables, insect pest management techniques, use of biofortified FYMs, etc, for achieving sustainable production in vegetable cultivation. During the training programme, several technical sessions were conducted covering the following topics: Nursery raising and package of practices for growing important vegetables crops by Dr. M. Bilashini Devi, Scientist, DSRE; Soil management for resilient Agroecosystems: A pathway to enhance IPM strategies by Dr. L. Joymati Chanu, Scientist, DSRE; Integrated disease management of vegetable crops by Dr. Tasvina R. Borah Sr. Scientist, DCS; and Importance and scope of protected cultivation of vegetable crops by Dr. H. Talang, Scientist, DSRE. Integrated Pest Management on vegetable crops by Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Sr. Scientist, DCS and Economics of IPM in vegetable crops by Dr. Anjoo Yumnam, Scientist, DTAC. Besides these, hands on training and demonstration on the use and application of Biopesticides and Good Agricultural Practices on use of pesticides in crops was given by Dr. Y. Bijenkumar, Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Scientists, DSRE and Dr. K. Kuotsu (YP-II), DCS. Scientists and farmers interaction was a major part of the programme, where the queries of the farmers were answered by the scientists. Essential agricultural inputs like vegetable seeds of pea, chilli, tomato, coriander, lettuce, and cucumber along with biopesticides and fruit fly traps were distributed to all participants to support adoption of IPM practices in their respective fields. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Dr. Pankaj Baiswar, Dr. Y. Bijenkumar, Dr. Tasvina R. Borah, Dr. H. Talang, Dr. M. Bilashini Devi, Dr. L. Joymati Chanu, Dr. Niranjan Kumar and Dr. Anjoo Yumnam. Sincere gratitude goes to the Director of the Institute, Dr. Ghatak sir for his ever guidance, Dr. B.P. Singh, Nodal Officer (TSP) for providing funds for conducting the training programme, Mr. Shyamson, Mr. Ankit Singh, Mr. Surya, Mr. Khrieketou and all the other permanent and contractual staffs that have directly or indirectly contributed in organizing this programme.
